The Power of Geographic Information

GeoCoding and Reverse Geocoding

Geocode

Geocoding is the process of accurately transforming a street address, which is a description of a location, into latitude and longitude coordinates. Reverse Geocoding is the opposite, whereby a point on a map, can be given a descriptive location, such as estimated address or nearest intersection.

GeoCoding

Over 80% of corporate data has some location information. The most common type is an address. Addresses of customers, stores, workers etc. This makes GeoCoding the first step in mapping your data.

Reverse GeoCoding

Reverse GeoCoding enables the input of latitude and longitude coordinates to determine an address, a place, or associated attribute information. AltaMap GeoCoder has both forward and Reverse Geocoding capabilities and can provide street level addressing which includes street number and street name. Where this level of accuracy is not contained in the map database, AltaMap GeoCoder can be customized to return the nearest intersection.

An end user can also query the map for additional information. Using a mouse hover, or clicking on the map, AltaMap can accurately create lat/lon coordinates and return the Reverse Geocoded information.

Reverse GeoCoding has become an essential feature for managing mobile assets and employees, which are monitored using location tracking devices. They require a method of determining where they are located in an easy to understand format.
